Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas. With Descriptions 1865 by Johnson & Ward. First Edition of This Version. Chronological History of the Civil War. Here is a great Antique 1865 Atlas of Johnson's Illustrated Family Atlas of the World. Would make a great gift for a special occasion, or keep for yourself! We can therefore better control our acquisition costs, keep commission costs low (if applicable), and finally, we don't have the overhead that the higher end houses and book shops experience. This Atlas is a first edition of this version. This version is the original issue, not the Atlas with the reissued title page that more firmly states the Atlas contents are the sole proprietorship of Johnson, over the former Colton interest. The Atlas was done by Alvin Jewett Johnson, a very famous and respected cartographer. Issued by Johnson & Ward.

Some of the map plates are from the predecessor's Colton's General Atlas and others are completely new with this issuance. The Atlas also has a Chronological History of the Civil War included in it. The green/gold finish cloth covered hardcovers are still attached to the rest of the book. The inside of the covers are marbled.

Some loss of the fabric covering to the covers most noticeable along the edges and corners. Some bending and wear to the finish and edges of the covers. The title page says the Atlas was accepted by Congress in 1864 and just above that shows 1865. Some minor foxing or brown spotting to the Atlas.

The first few pages are getting loose at the spine. A part of the bottom of the foldout page that reflects the National Emblems is missing and the fold out is separated at the spine, see pic.

The left side of the New York map on page 27 is not with the Atlas. The left side of the Pennsylvania map on page 31 is separated at the spine and a 1 piece of the lower left corner is missing. The onion skin that is in place before the frontispiece is not all there. Some minor watermarking along the top edges around pages 30-34. We have attempted to capture the most noticeable condition items to the Atlas here.

You are certainly welcome to come see the Atlas in person as well. The Atlas has 130 pages. Lots of reading materials at the front of the Atlas and full index at the back of the Atlas.

Include the results of the most recent Federal Census at that time. All the maps appear to be in place, including the Hemisphere Maps on pages 11 & 12, the World Map on pages 13 and 14, the North American Map on pages 15 & 16, and the United States Map on pages 20 & 21. The Johnson's Family Atlas is 18-5/8" tall, by 14-5/8" across, by 1.25 wide. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures.
