This listing is for an Original and Rare Atlas, MITCHELL'S NEW GENERAL ATLAS of the World for 1869 published by S. The full title of this book is. Mitchell's New General Atlas, Containing Maps Of The Various Countries Of The World, Plans Of Cities, Etc.

Embraced In Sixty-Three Quarto Maps, Forming A Series Of One Hundred Maps And Plans, Together With Valuable Statistical Tables. The Mitchell company was one of the first to try out the new technique of engraving on steel plates, experimenting with steel almost 20 years before the rest of the publishing industry. This resulted in sharper, clearer maps. He was printing with steel in the early 1830's; the general switch to steel was approximately 1850.

In 1846, the company also switched to steel engraving as their primary means of printing. The New Universal Atlas was published until 1859. In 1860, it was replaced by Mitchell's New General Atlas, and Mitchell Sr.

Retired and turned the business over to his son of the same name. The New General Atlas was published until 1893.

13" x 16" and is in Fair condition. The Front cover has lots of wear and is pulled away from the spine but still connected to the back cover which is still connected to the spine. The first map is also separated from the binding.

One of the Index pages is ripped but intact. I checked and all the maps are in the book.

Beautiful, hand-colored maps published shortly after the Civil War. A wonderful collection of detailed Maps that brings you back in time.
