A Dictionary of Music and Musicians was planned and edited by Sir George Grove DCL in 4 Volumes in 1878. After 6 reprints a second edition was published in 5 volumes in 1904-10. 3rd, 4th & 5th editions each larger than the one before followed. In 1980 The New Grove Dictionary was published by Macmillan in the present 20 volumes under the editorship of Stanley Sadie.

10 further versions each with minor emendations followed before the 1992 edition from which this collection comes. Each book 25 x 18 cm, approx. 900 pp carries some illustrations originated by Fletcher & Sons of Norwich. The complete set has been used very occasionally and remains in excellent condition.
